England bounced back in the ongoing Ashes 2023 with a crucial three-wicket victory over Australia at Headingley. After losing the first two Tests, England found themselves in a must-win situation, and they rose to the occasion with a strong performance to make a comeback in the series.

Ben Stokes breaks MS Dhoni's record

England successfully chased their target of 251 and secured a crucial victory in the third Ashes Test. This achievement also saw England's captain, Ben Stokes, break a significant record previously held by former Indian captain MS Dhoni.

Stokes's leadership has now resulted in five victories for England while successfully chasing targets of over 250 runs in Test matches. This surpasses Dhoni's previous record of four such victories while leading the Indian team. Brian Lara and Ricky Ponting follow Dhoni with three wins each while chasing a target of over 250.

Coming to the game, Chris Woakes and Mark Wood, both making a return to the team made their presence felt with both bat and ball. Wood's five-wicket haul restricted Australia's scoring, as he dismantled their batting line-up with figures of 5 wickets for 34 runs in the first innings. Despite Mitchell Marsh's impressive run-a-ball century, Wood's efforts prevented Australia from dominating the game as they were bowled out for 263.

In response, after a sudden batting collapse, England's skipper, Ben Stokes, continued his outstanding form with a superb knock of 80 runs, helping his team reduce the deficit to just 26 runs.

In the second innings, Woakes and Wood along with Stuart Broad bowled exceedingly well to dismiss Australia for 224. With a target of 251 runs, England, despite the haunting memories of their Lord's defeat, comfortably chased down the total.

Although Mitchell Starc provided some resistance by taking regular wickets, Harry Brook's crucial innings of 75 runs shifted the game in England's favour. Eventually, Woakes and Wood sealed the victory, ensuring England's first win in the series.
