England roared back into contention in Ashes 2023, staging a magnificent comeback against Australia to narrow the series margin to 2-1 with a hard-fought three-wicket victory.

Ben Stokes reflects on crucial game-altering element

After a tense two-wicket win at Edgbaston and a commanding 43-run triumph at Lord's, Australia was poised to seal the series. However, Ben Stokes’ troops had other plans as they delivered a spectacular performance at Headingley breathing new life into their quest to turn the series around.

Reflecting on the nail-biting match that unfolded until the very last moments, Stokes expressed his satisfaction with his team's win. The charismatic southpaw particularly commended the batting heroics of Mitchell Marsh , lauding his fearless approach and pivotal contributions that shifted the game's momentum.

Stokes also expressed his delight at the return of Mark Wood and Chris Woakes to the team, recognizing their invaluable contributions.

Another down-to-the-wire game. Nice to get over the line and keep our hopes alive. Saw the way Mitch Marsh batted. Came in and took the game on. We had Woody and Woakesy back in and they did well. We picked teams and look how they can impact us in the game. We try to see how they can be influential in the game,” said Stokes.

Singling out Wood, Stokes praised the speedster's ability to consistently bowl at high velocities and his audacious batting style. He emphasized the added advantage that Wood's aggressive approach brings to the team, increasing their chances of success.

"Hope he can do something similar when he plays next. [on Mark Wood] Having someone who can bowl at 95 mph is amazing. With the bat, he is just a free spirit. Goes back to the clarity. 24 off 8 balls was a massive swing in the game,” added the English captain.

Looking ahead to the upcoming crucial match, Stokes acknowledged the anticipation surrounding it. He stressed the significance of the nine-day break, which will provide much-needed rest for the players' bodies and allow them to recharge for the challenges that lie ahead.

"The next game is very vital. Everyone wants to see good cricket. This nine-day break will help the bodies a world of good,” stated the all-rounder.

Stokes also expressed his team's immense joy in representing England and playing at the hallowed Headingley venue. He reserved special praise for the electric crowd, with a special mention for the Western Terrace, reminiscing about the unforgettable memories associated with the spirited support.

“We love to come here and play cricket for England. [on the Headingley crowd] Absolutely sensational. This place has memories that people will always remember and we love playing here,” concluded Stokes

With the Ashes series hanging in the balance, all eyes now turn to the next encounter, where England will seek to level the playing field against their rivals. The fourth Test will commence on Jul 19 at Old Trafford in Manchester.
