Under the spotlight at Headingley and amidst a thrilling contest in the third Ashes Test, the young English prodigy, Harry Brook, created history.

Harry Brook races into the record books

Overcoming a period of disheartening performance in Ashes 2023, Brook sprang back to form as he played sensationally to set a new world record by becoming the quickest player to score 1000 Test runs in terms of balls faced.

The 24-year-old batter, who tamed the Australian bowling attack, scored his 1000th run in the longest format of the game in just 1058 balls. Brook's splendid feat toppled the previous record set by New Zealand all-rounder Colin De Grandhomme, who had reached the milestone in 1140 deliveries.

Interestingly, the third spot is held by New Zealand pacer, Tim Southee with 1167 balls, followed marginally by England opener, Ben Duckett in 1168 deliveries.

Moreover, Brook's record-shattering spree does not stop there. His rapid run-scoring spree has positioned him extremely close to another illustrious milestone - the fewest innings to reach 1000 runs. The young sensation shares the fifth position on this leaderboard, having achieved the feat in just 17 innings.

Cricketing legends Herbert Sutcliffe and ED Weekes lead this list, with their record standing at 12 innings. They are followed by the legendary Sir Don Bradman and Vinod Kambli, who reached the landmark in 13 and 14 innings respectively.

Meanwhile, just when it seemed that England would cruise to victory, a momentary lapse in concentration saw Brook trying to pull a short Mitchell Starc delivery which was caught at mid-off by Pat Cummins.

Mark Wood joined Chris Woakes at the crease with another 21 runs required. The returning duo ensured that England secured a nail-biting win without any further setbacks with three wickets to spare. With this win, England has breathed life into the Ashes 2023 campaign, narrowing the deficit to 2-1.
