'Why Not Virat Kohli?' MSK Prasad Advocates For Veteran's Captaincy Comeback

Former Indian selector, MSK Prasad, has voiced his support for Virat Kohli to reassume the Test captaincy role. Presently, the responsibility of leading the Test team lies with Rohit Sharma, who took over after Kohli's resignation in January 2022 post a series defeat in South Africa.

Former selector pushes for Kohli's captaincy comeback

Prasad, under whose leadership Kohli navigated the Indian Test team to the pinnacle of world cricket, including a historic Test series triumph in Australia, staunchly advocated for Kohli's return to captaincy. He cited the need for the Indian team to strategize for a future without Rohit.

Despite the team's defeat in the WTC final, the selection panel upheld Rohit's position as the Test captain for the imminent West Indies series and reinstated Ajinkya Rahane as his deputy.

Rahane had been away from the team for over a year and made his comeback in the WTC final. Prasad questioned the apparent paradox in the veteran batter's swift promotion to vice-captaincy upon his return.

In an interview with Khel Now, Prasad suggested that if Rahane can return and reclaim the vice-captaincy, then why not consider Kohli as a potential option for captaincy? He further expressed uncertainty about Kohli's mindset regarding captaincy, but according to him, if the selectors are considering alternatives to Rohit, they should also consider Kohli as a viable choice.

"Why not Virat Kohli? When Ajinkya Rahane can come back and become the vice-captain, then why not Virat Kohli? I don’t know what the mindset of Virat is on captaincy. In case selectors are thinking beyond Rohit, I don’t know whether they are thinking but if they are thinking beyond Rohit, then I think Virat can also be an option," said Prasad.

Meanwhile, Kohli, along with the Indian team is in West Indies where the two teams will compete in two Tests, three ODIs, and five T20Is, including two matches to be played in Lauderhill, Florida, at the United States of America.

The tour will get underway with the first Test, starting July 12 in Dominica.
