Babar mocked by fans [Source: AFP Photo]
It seems like nothing is going right for Babar Azam at the moment, as the star batter, who made his return to the international circuit after two months, failed to deliver the goods and departed for just 23 off 48 balls on a wicket where most of the Pakistan batters capitalised and scored big runs.
At one stage, he got off to a flying start as Babar targeted the Proteas spinners and unleashed a flurry of boundaries. However, when two wickets fell in quick succession, the Pakistan batter went into a shell and played a defensive knock, eventually falling prey to Simon Harmer as the South African spinner trapped him lbw.
Babar was shell-shocked after his dismissal, and he was dejected as he walked back to the pavilion on Day 1. After his wicket, a video went viral in which some Pakistan fans tore him apart and mocked their own player by chanting “Zimbabar, Zimbabar.”
What is the reason for Zimbabar chants towards Babar?
Babar Azam’s international career has unfortunately been marred by the fact that his side only plays against second-string teams. When Pakistan plays at home, the opponents send their B team, and hence, even when Babar scored runs against them, he gets criticised.
Moreover, against Zimbabwe, Babar has a staggering ODI average of 114, and hence, fans often mock him with Zimbabar chants, for always performing against weak opposition. He tends to struggle against the best of the best oppositions, and when the lights are brightest, fans believe that Babar fails to deliver the goods.
He has a poor track record in ICC events, as the batter has mostly failed when it mattered the most, and in the last two ICC events under his leadership, the Pakistan side failed to qualify for the knockout stage of the competition.
