In the absence of the star spinner, Keshav Maharaj, South Africa needed someone to step up and take wickets against the Pakistan side, and Senuran Muthusamy raised his hands as he decimated the Pakistan batting lineup with his excellent bowling in the first Test match in Lahore. His spell came in at a critical juncture of the game.

He bowled two breathtaking spells in the game, and both times, he derailed Pakistan’s momentum as the side collapsed from 362/5 to 378 all-out. In his first spell, he dismissed Imam-ul-Haq and Saud Shakeel in successive deliveries to stop their momentum.

In his second-best spell of the innings, the wily spinner ran riot to get rid of the middle order and the lower order batters as Pakistan lost 5 wickets for just 16 runs.

Meet Muthusamy, the 31-year-old spin magican

An all-rounder from Kwa-Zulu Natal, Senuran Muthusamy developed his skills while playing for the domestic club, Dolphins. He honed his skills as a lower-order batter and as a wily spinner who had the capability to take wickets with his bowling.

He is not a huge turner of the ball, but the spinner has the ability to bowl at the same lines and lengths in Test match cricket, and this makes him a frustrating prospect for the opposition batters.

During his initial domestic season in the 2016-17 season, Muthusamy’s batting was inspired by Kumar Sangakkara, but after careful consideration, he focused more on his bowling, and this turned out to be the right decision as he was fast-tracked in the Proteas squad, and he made his Test debut against India in 2019, and his first Test victim was India legend, Virat Kohli.

However, he shot to fame after his impressive spell against Pakistan in the first Test match in Lahore.
