A lot was expected of Babar Azam on his Pakistan comeback after nearly two months, but the star batter had yet another disappointing outing as he failed to deliver the goods in the first innings of the Test match against South Africa in Lahore. The batter looked solid for a brisk moment, but then everything fell apart as the Proteas spinner trapped him in his web.
Another disappointing outing by Babar Azam
He came out to bat at number 4 when Pakistan were in a pole position to dominate the South African bowlers, as the scoreboard read 163/2. Babar himself played some delightful strokes and looked in ominous touch before disaster struck in the form of Simon Harmer.
After a quick-fire start, the same old problems occurred as Babar slowed down and went into his shell, and this is when the spinner struck. Harmer delivered a tossed-up ball as Babar missed an easy flick and the ball clipped the pad. The original decision was not out, and the visitors sent it upstairs.
The TV umpire checked for a spike, but there was no inside-edge as Babar was given lbw. This stunned the Pakistan batter as he walked back to the pavilion, dejected.
Babar's Test place in jeopardy
Once touted as the future of Pakistan cricket, Babar has witnessed a slump in Test cricket over the last three years. His last Test ton came in December 2022, and since then, the numbers have dried, and so have the match-winning knocks.
This year, he has only averaged 30.67, and the same was the case in 2024 and 2023. Moreover, he was recently dropped from the Pakistan T20I squad for the Asia Cup, and if reports are to be believed, then his place in Test squad could be in jeopardy if his performances don’t improve.
