Rain interrupted the final of IPL 2023 between winners Chennai Super Kings and runners-up Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Shortly after the CSK openers walked in to bat in the run chase, the ground had to be covered as it started pouring.

While it rained for not more than 20 minutes, the groundsmen at the venue, which is the world’s largest cricket stadium, were seen having a difficult time draining the water from the pitch.

Among other methods, they also used the sponge to absorb rainwater. This led to memes on social media, with fans and the like wondering how the BCCI, the richest cricket board in the world, could not come up with a better method to dry the ground. Some Twitter users spoke about the Hover Cover, and how the BCCI can use it at Indian venues.

What is Hover Cover?

A Hover Cover is a hovercraft designed for cricket grounds to protect the pitch from getting damp due to rain. Unlike the conventional covers, the Hover Cover is covered with metal, and its hovercraft design lets them hover above the ground without manual efforts.

The match was stopped for more than an hour due to the rain, before being resumed at 12.30 AM, when CSK’s revised target was 171 runs from 15 overs. The match went down to the wire, with the Super Kings needing 10 off the last two ball to lift the trophy for the fifth time. Ravindra Jadeja sent the ball to the fence for the two successive balls to take CSK to a memorable win.
