India have played their last ODI in 2025, with the home series against South Africa wrapped up. The year was a huge success for the Men in Blue in the longer white-ball format, with 11 wins in the 14 games that they played.
The year began with the series against England, which also served as the practice series for the forthcoming Champions Trophy. After the disappointment of the 2023 ODI World Cup, India were desperate to win an ICC ODI Trophy, and this series was crucial to get the momentum going.
In the first match, India managed to restrict England to a modest total of 248 runs. In the chase, Shubman Gill, batting at three in Virat Kohli’s absence, was the star of the night. His 87-run knock, combined with fifties from Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel, helped India comfortably win the game.
The second match saw Ravindra Jadeja perform with the ball and Rohit Sharma go all out with the bat. The 38-year-old continued his sublime form and scored 119 in just 90 balls in the chase of 305 runs. The same story continued in the third match; only this time, Gill reached the 100-run mark and helped India win the series 3-0.
Lifting an ICC ODI Trophy after 12 years
After a clean sweep in the England series, India were looking to continue their dominance in the Champions Trophy in February. India won their first game against Bangladesh comfortably, thanks to Mohammed Shami’s five-wicket haul and Gill continuing his form with yet another hundred.
And then came the big match against Pakistan, where Virat Kohli found his form and did what he does best against the arch-rivals: score a century to win the match. They cruised through the group stage with a win over New Zealand. Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, Hardik Pandya, and Varun Chakravarthy also played their part in winning the matches.
Their team effort in the semi-final helped them beat the mighty Australian side as they moved on to play New Zealand in the summit clash. And it was only fitting that the skipper, Rohit Sharma, after a relatively quiet campaign, guided them through to a win with a masterful hundred. This win was truly special for India!
Change in leadership and threat to senior players’ spots in the team
With the IPL and Test season in full swing, India did not play an ODI for the next seven months. And when they did tour Australia for their next assignment, there were a lot of concerns.
To begin, Rohit was dropped as the captain in favour of Gill. To add to that, Ravindra Jadeja was dropped from the side. There were also rumours that this could be the only chance for Rohit and Virat to prove themselves after a long break and the fact that they had retired from Tests.
To everyone's dismay, India did not get off to a good start and lost the first match. But the second match marked the comeback of Rohit Sharma, who scored a well-fought fifty, albeit in a losing cause. The former skipper continued that form in the next match and scored a cautious century, earning him the Player of the Series award, proving to everyone that he was still fit for cricket. Even Virat scored a fifty in this match.
The two legends continued that form against South Africa and stitched an important partnership in the first match. While Rohit scored a fifty, Virat went on to score his 52nd ODI hundred. The 37-year-old reminded everyone of his peak form from 2016 as he scored a century in the 2nd match as well and a fifty in the final game.
The two stalwarts of Indian cricket have once again proved that they are real match-winners and can adapt to any challenge thrown at them. The end of ODIs in 2025 has given fans a real hope that Virat, Rohit, and even Jadeja are on the right track for a place in India’s squad for the 2027 World Cup.
