Virat Kohli turned back the clock during the recent ODI series against South Africa. He looked in exceptional form in that series and reminded fans of his prime form in 2016. This has also given fans some reassurance that he will be ready for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Earlier this year, Rohit Sharma made the headlines for his performance against Australia, where he also scored a century. He continued his form against South Africa, where he scored two half-centuries.
The two stars are 37 and 38 years old, respectively, making them the oldest players to win Player of the Series for India. On that note, let’s look at the complete list.
5. Sachin Tendulkar – 36y 309d – vs South Africa
No one can forget when Sachin Tendulkar became the first-ever player to score a double century in ODI cricket. Sachin, nearly 37 years old at the time, set the benchmark for the highest quality of cricket.
His innings was so special that he earned the Player of the Series award based only on this performance. He had scored just four runs in the first match and did not play the third game.
4. Virat Kohli – 37y 31d – vs South Africa
Many experts ruled Virat Kohli out of contention for the 2027 World Cup, but he proved why he is the best in the business. Playing against South Africa, the 37-year-old was at his absolute best and scored back-to-back runs in the series.
He scored centuries in the first two matches and followed it up with a fifty in the last game. His 302 runs in the series came at a fairly good strike rate of 117. He played at a good strike rate and always kept things under control.
3. Sunil Gavaskar – 37y 190d – vs Sri Lanka
It was difficult to keep the Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar away from runs against any opposition. Even as he approached his retirement in 1987, it was difficult to stop him. He won his last Player of the Series award in the same year he retired at the age of 37.
In the five-match ODI series, Gavaskar scored 202 runs at an average of 50.50, with the highest score of 70 not out. He also played with a strike rate of 70 in the five-match series.
2. MS Dhoni – 37y 194d – vs Australia
During India’s tour of 2018/19, MS Dhoni was at his very best, scoring a fifty in each game of the ODI series. In the first match, he built an important 137-run partnership with Rohit Sharma to help rebuild their innings while chasing 289 runs. Unfortunately, India lost that match.
But after that, they turned things around. In the third game, MS built important partnerships with Virat Kohli and Kedar Jadhav to help India seal the series 2-0. He scored 193 runs in the three-match series.
1. Rohit Sharma – 38y 178d – vs Australia
Just like Kohli, Rohit Sharma was also under the scanner in this series. However, he refined his approach to ODI cricket and became much more cautious in his play. Even though he did not do well in the first match, he bounced back in the last two games, scoring a fifty and a century.
He was aware that his place in the team was in jeopardy and made sure to score big in this series. He ended with 202 runs in three matches at an average of 85.5. This new approach helped him secure his place in the team.
