During a rain delay at Perth, cameras caught ex-Indian skipper Rohit Sharma casually munching on popcorn. But his fitness coach and friend Abhishek Nayar’s hilarious reaction in the commentary box instantly went viral.

The first ODI between India and Australia was severely hampered by recurring rain interruptions at Optus Stadium in Perth.

During one such break, Rohit and Shubman Gill were spotted chatting inside the dressing room while munching on popcorn.

However, former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar didn’t appreciate Rohit Sharma’s popcorn party with Gill. Commentating for Star Sports, he said, “Arey bhai, usse popcorn mat de! (Don’t let him eat popcorn!)”

Interestingly, Nayar’s comment stemmed from the fitness perspective. Just before the Australia tour, the ex-coach worked tirelessly with Rohit for 12 weeks to help him physically transform.

In just a few months, Rohit shed loads of kilos and is now much fitter and leaner, all part of his preparation for the 2027 World Cup.

"I think there’s been a lot of talk about weight loss. The initial parts were obviously about getting fitter and getting leaner. I spoke about this before. There was a spitting image of him walking out of the airport after his holiday in the UK. So that was something he wanted to change. The outlook was obviously the 2027 World Cup, to be fitter, stronger, lighter, and more agile,” Nayar had earlier said.

On the field, though, things didn’t go as planned for the veteran opener. After the game resumed, Rohit managed only 8 runs off 14 balls before being dismissed by Josh Hazlewood.

India ended up struggling in the rain-shortened 26-over match, scoring just 137 runs, with KL Rahul being the top scorer with 38.

Australia, meanwhile, chased down the total in 21.1 overs to seal a 7-wicket victory and go 1-0 in the 3-game series.

The second ODI will now be played on Thursday, October 23, at the Adelaide Oval Stadium.
