Bangladesh have decided to strengthen their spin attack, bringing back left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed for the ongoing ODI series against the West Indies. The move comes after spinners stole the show in the series opener at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, where both sides struggled on a sluggish surface that had turn written all over it.
Bangladesh recall Nasum Ahmed after spinners dominate first ODI
The 30-year-old Nasum, who last played an ODI in December 2024, has 16 wickets in 18 games at an economy of just 4.48. With the Mirpur surface offering plenty of assistance to spinners, his return feels like the right call at the right time.
In the first match, Bangladesh’s spinners did all the heavy lifting. Rishad Hossain and Tanvir Islam shared eight wickets to hand the hosts a commanding 1–0 lead. West Indies’ left-arm spinner Khary Pierre and offie Roston Chase also kept things tight, proving just how much purchase there was for spin.
Given the conditions, Bangladesh’s think tank has clearly doubled down on spin as their weapon of choice. Nasum’s accuracy and control could be a key factor in the middle overs, especially with the surface likely to tire out as the series progresses.
With back-to-back matches lined up on October 21 and 23 in Mirpur, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and his men will hope to wrap up the series before experimenting with combinations in the final game.
