Australia caned India in the first ODI to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The much-anticipated returns of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli failed to ignite the Indian innings in a rain-affected contest that saw Australia assert complete dominance at Perth Stadium.

Here, we take a look at the entire highlights of the first ODI of the three-match series between Australia and India, as it panned out at the Perth Stadium in Perth on Sunday, October 19.

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli fail on return in rain-marred Indian innings

Seasoned opener Rohit Sharma and fellow legendary veteran and comeback man Virat Kohli both failed to get going on their respective ODI returns for Team India. While Sharma nicked one to Matt Renshaw off Josh Hazlewood for just eight in the fourth over, Kohli was toppled by Mitchell Starc for a sluggish eight-ball duck. Newly-appointed ODI captain Shubman Gill was also strangled by Nathan Ellis for just 10 as India slipped to 25-3 in 8.1 overs.

Shreyas Iyer became Hazlewood’s second victim of the day, before Axar Patel (31 off 38) and KL Rahul (38 off 31) forged valuable runs for Team India in a revised 26-over innings amid rain interruptions. All-rounders Washington Sundar (10 off 10) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (19* off 11) also chipped in with swift cameos as India reached 136-9 in 26 overs.

For Australia, Josh Hazlewood (2-20), Mitchell Owen (2-20) and Matthew Kuhnemann (2-26) picked up two wickets each in the innings.

Mitchell Marsh and Philippe anchor Australia to big win

Chasing a revised target of 131 from 26 overs, Australia lost opener Travis Head and number three Matthew Short for eight runs each to Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel within the first eight overs of the innings. Captain Mitchell Marsh, however, led Australia’s defiance with a regal 46*-run knock from 52 balls with two fours and three huge sixes.

Josh Philippe at number four also chipped in with a quick 37 as the two cricketers crafted a match-defining 55-run partnership before the wicketkeeper-batter was dismissed by Washington Sundar (1-14). Marsh subsequently consolidated with Matt Renshaw (21* off 24) to steer Australia to a huge seven-wicket win in 21.1 overs.
