On Sunday, October 19, India ended their winning streak and registered their first ODI defeat in a year. In the rain-reduced game, the visitors, batting first, tumbled for just 136 runs in 26 overs.

In reply, Australia, who were asked to chase down 131 runs, registered a comfortable seven-wicket win to lead the series 1-0. It was a disappointing show from the Men in Blue, and while the focus is on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's dismal performance, one should not shift their focus away from Shubman Gill's underwhelming performance as a captain.

Gill follows Kohli's footsteps but the wrong one

Notably, the recently concluded ODI marked Gill's first match as India's ODI captain. Further, with the defeat, the right-handed batter matched Virat Kohli's unwanted feat as he became the second India captain in the game's history, after Virat, to lose the first matches as a captain across all three formats.

Shubman Gill made his India captaincy debut in the T20I format when he led the side against Zimbabwe in the first T20I on July 6 2024. Notably, India suffered a 13-run defeat in that match. Further, Gill's Test tenure began against England in the recently concluded Test series, where India suffered a five-wicket defeat at Headingley.

How did Virat Kohli do in first matches as India captain?

Test Cricket

Kohli's first Test as India captain was the 1st Test against Australia in Adelaide, December 9-13, 2014. India lost to Australia by 48 runs while chasing a target of 364.

One Day Internationals (ODIs)

Kohli's first match as India captain in ODIs was against Sri Lanka in July 2013, where the Men in Blue registered a massive 161 runs defeat against the Island Nation.

Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is)

Kohli's first T20I as captain was the 1st T20I against England at Kanpur on January 26, 2017. India lost by 7 wickets. Kohli scored 29 (26), but England chased down the target of 147 with 7 wickets and 1.5 overs to spare.
