India lost the first ODI against Australia at Perth on October 18 after the rain gods decided to frustrate the players as well as the audience with four short spells of showers. India failed from the very start as the much-awaited comeback of the Rohit Sharma-Virat Kohli duo ended in heartbreak.

As fans rue the missed opportunity in a rain-curtailed game, Shubman Gill, the new Indian skipper to lead ODIs, shared his viewpoint as India gets another chance on October 23 to salvage the series.

Gill opens up after 1st ODI loss

Speaking at the post-match presentation, Gill outright admitted the failure to build momentum from the very start of the game. He also expressed disappointment with the frustrating rain that halted the play four times.

"Yes, I mean, when you lose three wickets in the powerplay, you're always trying to play a catch-up game (on the rain delays and the poor start). A lot of learning for us from this game, and a lot of positives for us as well," Gill said.

As rain struck a lot of times, India finally got 26 overs to play after losing 4 wickets ahead of the final rain break. With Axar Patel and KL Rahul's contributions, the total went past the 130-run mark. However, the DLS method cut the target from 137 to 131 for Australia in 26 overs.

Gill satisfied with bowling performance

Gill spoke on the defence with the ball. The three wickets that the Men in Blue managed to hunt before Australia bagged the win. Gill also thanked the audience for staying patient and turning up in huge numbers.

"We were defending 130, and we took the game, not till the very end, but pretty deep. We were very satisfied with that. We are very fortunate (with the crowd support). The fans turned up in huge numbers, and hopefully they'll be able to cheer us on at Adelaide as well," Gill concluded.

After the conclusion of the first ODI, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, as part of the Indian team, will get another chance to revive their batting collapse on Australian soil. With the ball too, India was not super impressive, since Mitchell Marsh managed to see the end of the game with Josh Philippe and Matt Renshaw.
