India’s star opener and Test captain Rohit Sharma has officially announced his retirement from Test cricket. The 38-year-old took to Instagram on Wednesday to share the news, and his wife, Ritika Sajdeh, was heartbroken with the development.
After a lean patch in the 2024–25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia and a dip in form against New Zealand at home, pressure mounted on Rohit’s place in the side, both as a batter and a captain.
Recently, rumours surfaced that Rohit will be sacked as captain ahead of India’s lengthy Test tour to England in June. But before that could happen, he pulled the plug himself.
Ritika Sajdeh Displeased With Rohit Sharma Quitting Test Cricket
On May 7, Rohit Sharma announced his Test retirement through an Instagram story. However, he stated that he would continue to represent India in ODIs, having already retired from T20Is following the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Meanwhile, his wife, Ritika Sajdeh, was heartbroken as she reshared Rohit’s post and added emotional emojis to express her feelings.
With Rohit stepping aside, the Indian team management will now look for a new Test captain ahead of the five-Test series in England.
According to rumours, young opener Shubman Gill is currently the front-runner for the role, with other names like Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, and Rishabh Pant also being considered.
India Likely To Change Test Vice-Captain
India’s Test leadership setup appears set for a shake-up, with reports suggesting that Jasprit Bumrah could be removed from the vice-captaincy role ahead of the five-Test series in England. Bumrah’s recurring injury issues have led the selectors to seek a change. According to TOI, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant are the leading candidates to replace Bumrah.
