Dig At Pant? Aakash Chopra Repents Jasprit Bumrah Not Being IPL's 'Costliest' Player

The Gujarat Titans (GT) clinched a nail-biting three-wicket win over Mumbai Indians (MI) in a weather-disrupted IPL 2025 encounter. Despite MI’s strong start at 89/2 in 10 overs, their innings unravelled to 155/8.

GT’s chase, initially steady at 113/2 in 14.4 overs, turned tense after Jasprit Bumrah’s fiery spell dismissed Shubman Gill and Shahrukh Khan. Rain interruptions added drama, but what prevailed was Bumrah's shiny spell of 2/19.

Aakash Chopra Hails Bumrah's Heroics

Speaking on Bumrah’s genius, former India cricketer Aakash Chopra hailed his brilliance and his ability to keep his nerves calm under high pressure scenarios.

“Bumrah has made it a habit to produce game-changing spells. Coming in right after the strategic timeout and rain break, he dismissed Shubman Gill and then Shahrukh Khan, swinging the momentum back to MI," Chopra said on JioHotstar.

Aakash Chopra further hailed Bumrah as once in a once-in-a-generation talent while rueing the fact that Bumrah is not the most expensive player in IPL.

"He’s a once-in-a-generation talent — you could talk about him endlessly. Frankly, he deserves to be the most expensive player in the league. It’s unfortunate that he isn’t,” Chopra said.

While Chopra's praise for Bumrah was unfiltered, a subtle taunt on Rishabh Pant (most expensive buy for IPL 2025) can be smelled as the latter failed to convert his reputation on the field this season.

GT Haults MI's Progress

Notably, the loss halted MI’s six-match winning streak, leaving them with 14 points from 12 games. Bumrah’s 17th-over breakthrough, cleaning up Shahrukh, briefly revived hopes, but GT’s lower order held nerve. While MI remain in playoff contention, the match underscored their reliance on Bumrah, whose 2/19 nearly masked a subpar team performance.

Mumbai will next face Punjab at Dharamsala on May 11 at 3:30 PM IST which will be a must-win match if they want to continue with their playoffs chances.
