The Super Four battle between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh during the Asia Cup 2025 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium became electric when Mahedi Hasan got Kusal Mendis out for 34 runs. The dismissal sparked wild celebrations among fans in the stands, who broke into the famous Nagin dance.

Bangladesh beat Sri Lanka by 4 wickets in the first game of the Super Four stage to triumph in the infamous ‘Nagin’ rivalry. Chasing a 169-run total, Saif Hassan (61) and Towhid Hridoy (58) helped the Tigers chase down the total in 19.5 overs.

Bangladesh Brings Out Nagin Dance To Mock Sri Lanka

That being said, during the first inning, Sri Lanka’s Kusal Mendis, who looked dangerous with 3 sixes and a 4 in his 25-ball knock, tried to sweep Mahedi Hasan but ended up top-edging the ball straight into the hands of Saif Hassan at deep backward square leg.

While Mahedi celebrated with a pumped fist, the camera soon panned to the stands, where Bangladeshi supporters were seen performing the nagin dance.

In a matter of minutes, the video of the celebration began doing rounds on social media platforms, evoking nostalgic responses from fans.

Not only that, but even after Bangladesh beat Sri Lanka, a lot of supporters broke into the Nagin dance to mock Sri Lanka and celebrate their team’s triumph.

What Is the ‘Nagin’ Rivalry?

The nagin dance has an interesting history in cricket. Although most of the fans think it was made popular by Bangladesh players such as Mushfiqur Rahim, the celebration's origin is traced back to Sri Lanka's Dasun Gunathilaka.

Back in 2018, during Sri Lanka’s tour of Bangladesh, Gunathilaka first performed the celebration after a T20I win in Sylhet. Later that year, Mushfiqur Rahim recreated the same move in the Nidahas Trophy after his match-winning fifty against Sri Lanka in Colombo.

Since then, it has become a tradition that Bangladeshi fans and players have proudly continued.
