This time, Harmanpreet Kaur and Co. didn’t let the hopes down as they clinched the highly anticipated trophy.

After delivering consistent performance throughout the group stage and knockouts, they secured the historic title after defeating South Africa Women by 52 runs. As the DY Patil Stadium witnessed the historic triumph, the joy was felt in every corner of the nation as the Indian Women’s side celebrated their triumph to the fullest.

Last night, the Mumbai crowd witnessed the long-awaited moment as the Indian Women’s side seized the most desired victory. While batting first, Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma laid a strong foundation of a 104-run partnership. After Smriti’s graceful 45, Shafali continued her fiery strokeplay, while Deepti Sharma’s composed 58 powered India to a formidable total of 298.

Defending the total in the second innings, the Indian bowlers dominated the Protea batting lineup. Skipper Laura Wolvaardt fought valiantly with a stunning century, but Deepti Sharma had other plans. Her crucial strike in the 42nd over sent the South African captain packing, the turning point of the night. After Deepti sent de Klerk back in 18 runs and India Women lifted their maiden Women’s World Cup trophy.
