India Women have left something that will inspire generations to come. A proud maiden World Cup title win, and the orchestrator behind that, head coach Amol Muzumdar, could not be prouder of the feat.
Embracing the trophy like a newborn baby, Amol, who led the team from the dugout, was overjoyed and expressed pure raw emotions after Harmanpreet Kaur palmed a lofted short over the covers from Nadine De Klerk.
Amol Muzumdar reflects on historical win
Speaking after the win, Amol spread his heartfelt message for the team while appreciating their hard work.
"Absolutely proud. I don't know, it has not yet sunk in. Unbelievable achievement and they deserve every credit and everything that will follow from here. They have worked terribly hard. They have done every Indian proud," Amol said.
India's journey throughout the campaign was not smooth at all. At one point, the team was almost out of contention from being even semi-finalists. Amol reflected on those losses, sharing what kept them going.
"We did not look at those losses as losses, we looked at them as matches we couldn't get over the line. We dominated majority of those games, and just thought there were some hiccups. We stayed alive in the tournament and here we are, as world champions. I know for a fact that they have worked extremely hard for this, and it is a watershed moment for Indian cricket," Amol added.
Amol lauds India Women's inspirational work
From having empty stadiums to a full-house Navi Mumbai crowd, Amol doubled down on the expansion of Women's cricket and how the World Cup win will define the era that is about to come.
"Magical. Turns up in the semi final. In the final, packed ground, turns up with a magical innings, and then with the ball. That was one thing we spoke a lot about in the dressing room. Fielding and fitness was something we spoke about. They just turned it up on this day in the World Cup final - I could not have asked for more. The ripple effects will be felt for generations," the head coach remarked.
Nevertheless, though it was a win for the hosts, South Africa Women had a hard time swallowing the reality pill since they had almost the same arc of journey to be the finalists.
India Women will let the winning feeling sink in now as their next assignment comes up against Australia Women for an all-format series starting from November 15 Down Under.
