In a 7-over per side T20I game, Pakistan lost to Australia by 29 runs to go 0-1 down in the 3-game series. Chasing 94 runs, Pakistan's batters crumbled to 16/5, and the unwarranted collapse under pressure triggered a wave of memes and trolls on social media.
The first T20I of the 3-game series between Pakistan and Australia scheduled at Gabba was severely hampered by rain. After relentless lighting and drizzle, the game was reduced to 7-over per side. Mohammad Rizwan won the toss and opted to field first.
However, Glenn Maxwell foiled their advantage with a blazing knock of 43 off 19 balls to set up a challenging chase of 94 runs for Pakistan. While the chase was tricky, Pakistani batters completely surrendered against the Australian pace duo of Nathan Ellis and Xavier Bartlett.
The top order, including Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam, departed to single-digit scores as Pakistan was down to 16/5 in a lost effort. Abbas Afridi added 20 off 10 balls, but the required run rate wasn’t ideal for him as Pakistan fell short of 29 runs and nearly escaped getting bowled out, finishing with 64/9.
Pakistan mocked for 29-run loss vs Australia
Naturally, for Pakistan, who are coming off a historic ODI series victory against Australia just last week, a shambolic performance in the first T20I was shocking. Local fans were hurt, whereas cricket fans across the globe made fun of the men in green on social media.
Memes surfaced on the ‘X’ platform, with many referring to Pakistan’s young brigade as PSL merchants and frauds. They called out the team’s inability to adapt to the pressure of international cricket and believe that these youngsters are not ready for the ultimate stage just yet.
The first T20I loss also raised questions on the veterans, including Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam as the duo are yet to prove themselves in the tour. Hence, the next two games will be a true litmus test for Pakistan. They need a series victory here to establish that the ODI win was not a one-time fluke.
