Will Ishan Kishan's BCCI Central Contract Be Terminated? Official Reveals

Amidst the worrying developments that have shaken the Indian cricketing fraternity, the focus is on young wicketkeeper-batter, Ishan Kishan, whose continued absence from competitive cricket post the South Africa Tour has led to widespread speculation about his future with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

BCCI official reveals insights on Ishan Kishan's central contract

Despite having a Grade C contract, which secures him an annual remuneration of ₹ 1 crore, questions about Ishan Kishan's potential exclusion from the BCCI's central contracts have emerged. Following a hiatus taken during India's tour of South Africa, Kishan has been absent from the cricketing scene, including the premier domestic Ranji Trophy.

This move, ostensibly to focus on individual training has caught the attention of many, considering the Indian team's coach, Rahul Dravid, had highlighted the need for Kishan to engage in regular cricketing activity to facilitate a national team comeback.

Addressing the swirling rumours, a senior BCCI official, preferring to remain unnamed, clarified that "no discussions have taken place as of now regarding central contracts."

This statement comes amidst increasing conjecture about Kishan's future with the Indian team, particularly with the T20 World Cup 2024 on the horizon, slated to begin on June 1, with India playing their first match on June 5 in New York.

With the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) scheduled tentatively between March 22 to May 26, the workload of India's core group of players has been under scrutiny, especially in the lead-up to the World Cup.

However, it has been made clear that Indian players will not receive specific workload management instructions during the IPL, recognising the commitments to their respective franchises, which invest significantly in their talents. Officials have highlighted that while players are expected to fulfill their obligations to franchises, there's a system in place for monitoring their fitness.

"They are being paid highly and they can't pick and choose games for franchises. But yes, for all those centrally contracted and targetted players (next lot), the franchise's support staff will have to regularly provide fitness update to the NCA Sports Science head Nitin Patel," a BCCI representative explained.

Furthermore, the BCCI is also considering a strategy to send players, whose IPL teams do not make it to the playoffs, to New York earlier to prepare for the World Cup. Those involved in the knockout stages will join the squad post-tournament.
