Dane Piedt produced a magnificent five-wicket haul for South Africa in the first-innings of the second Test against New Zealand in Hamilton. Brought into the side on a dry surface at Seddon Park, the off-spinner repaid the faith shown by the team management with figures of 5 for 89 on Day 2.

Piedt's marathon and fruitful spell of 32.3 overs helped the visitors take a surprise lead in the first-innings worth 31 runs as they rallied on the back of their comeback man and dismissed the series favourites for just 211.

It isn't just about the wickets and impact, however. The Proteas off-spinner's marvellous feat would've been immensely satisfying for him on the personal front as well, making his return to the international stage four years after giving up on South African cricket.

Not long after his previous Test appearance during the 2019 tour of India, Piedt announced his retirement from domestic and international duties with South Africa as he moved to USA to further pursue his cricketing ambitions, wanting to play for the rising associate rivals.

Part of the reason was a lack of opportunities as a spinner turning out for a pace-dominant outfit like the Proteas, with Piedt adding only 10 Test caps under his belt since making his debut appearance for South Africa in August 2014.

"If You look at the schedule, South Africa is not due to tour the subcontinent again soon and that’s the only place where I might get a game," Piedt had said in a statement at the time.

However, his deep-felt love for South African cricket never receded as the player came back to domestic first-class game in 2022 with Western Province, feeling obliged towards his state team as they required their veteran bowler's services.

Playing for the Free State team in November 2023, Piedt took a second-innings five-fer, which earned him a recall to the South African A side that took on the West Indies. Piedt showed his class with fifers in both the innings against the tourists and with Keshav Maharaj missing, got selected for the tour of New Zealand.
