The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) released a slew of players from their squad on IPL 2024 retention day. Star performers Harshal Patel and Wanindu Hasaranga were among the most prominent names to not feature in their retention list, as the two bowlers found themselves among the 10 players released by the franchise ahead of the auction event.

RCB’s newly appointed head coach Andy Flower has now explained the reasons behind releasing Patel and Hasaranga. The former Zimbabwe cricketer clarified that the decision to exclude the two from being retained was to get more financial flexibility at the auction.

Andy Flower explains Patel and Hasaranga snub

Andy Flower, who previously coached the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) franchise, was roped in by the RCB earlier this year.

Speaking on the release of Harshal Patel and Wanindu Hasaranga from the RCB camp, the former Zimbabwean cricketer said that the management did not retain the two cricketers because of their higher salaries. Flower added that the RCB is seeking to get more financial flexibility at the IPL 2024 auction. Describing them as “high-value players”, he said:

“Harshal's been an excellent performer for RCB in the past. He is a high-value player. He was on our books for INR 10.75 crore. In our efforts to release some cash to give us flexibility and give some buying power in the auction, he is someone we have to look closely at. Hasaranga is also a high value in monetary terms, so releasing that money gives us some flexibility.”

Here is a list of all players released by RCB ahead of IPL 2024 auction:

Wanindu Hasaranga, Harshal Patel, Josh Hazlewood, Finn Allen, Michael Bracewell, David Willey, Wayne Parnell, Sonu Yadav, Avinash Singh, Siddharth Kaul and Kedar Jadhav.

RCB veterans Virat Kohli, Faf du Plessis, Dinesh Karthik, Glenn Maxwell among few others did manage to retain their spots in the franchise. They are set to be joined by fresh additions, as RCB’s higher purse value will assist the management to purchase more players at the IPL 2024 auction, set to be organized in Dubai on December 19.
