Red Card, a rule traditionally practised in the game of football, was introduced in cricket by the Caribbean Premier League.

During the third match of the CPL 2024 edition between St Kitts and Nevis Patriots vs Trinbago Knight Riders, on-field umpire issued a red card to the Patriots.

And accordingly, captain Andre Fletcher had to send one player off the field for the finale over, thus fielding with just 10 players on the ground.

What Does The Red Card Rule State?

The Red Card rule was first introduced in CPL in the 2023 season to address the issue of teams taking too long to bowl their overs, which can disrupt the flow of the game and negatively impact the viewing experience.

The CPL Red Card rule is applied when a team is found guilty of not maintaining the required over rate during a match. If a team fails to bowl its overs within the stipulated time frame, the penalty involves removing one player from the field.

If a team is behind the required over rate after the 17th over, they will be warned. For the 18th and 19th over, a fielder each will be called up inside the 30-yard circle. However, if the team still fails to meet the over-rate requirement by the start of the final over, the red card will be shown.

Once the red card is issued, the captain of the penalised team must remove one player from the field. This effectively means the team will have only 10 players on the field for the remainder of the game.

Players To Receive A Red Card In Past

In the 2023 CPL season, Sunil Narine became the first cricketer to be penalised with a red card. The Trinbago Knight Riders were found guilty of slow over rate against Patriots and hence captain Kieron Pollard was forced to send Narine off the field for the 20th over of the innings.

A year later, history repeated itself as a player sent off via a red card in a game between St Kitts and Nevis Patriots vs Trinbago Knight Riders.
