Sports lovers are well acquainted with the Red Card rule of Football. Whenever the referees or the match officials of a game feel that a player has committed a foul on the field that is dangerous or that has interfered with a goal-scoring opportunity, they bring out the red card. The player who is shown the red card has walk out of the pitch immediately and his team has play the rest of the game with 10 players.

This rule is exclusive to football or hockey, and is not a part of the MCC rule book for cricket. However, the CPL governing body has introduced the red card system to complete the games within a stipulated time from 2023. The red card rule is a penalty which the teams face due to slow over rate.

St. Kitts and Nevis were shown the red card in CPL 2024

The CPL 2024 is up and running and in the third game of the tournament the Trinbago Knight Riders are up against the St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots. The Patriots had to face red card in this game as they were behind time at the start of the 20th or the last over of the Knight Riders innings.

As a result of the red card, Andre Fletcher, the skipper of the Patriots had to remove a fielder from the ground for the last six balls.

What is the red card rule in CPL?

In the CPL, if a team is behind time at the start of the 18th over, they have to bring an extra fielder inside the 30-yard circle and only four fielders are allowed in that case outside the circle (instead of the normal 5 fielders). If a team is behind time at the start of the penultimate over, then one more fielder has to be taken inside the circle.

If the team continues to be behind till the start the of the final over, it is then that the Red Card is show to the team and the captain has to remove a fielder from the ground.

Taking about the match, the Knight Riders batted first after Andre Fletcher put them in on winning the toss. Nicholas Pooran brought down carnage on the bowlers of the Patriots and scored a destructive 97 off 43 deliveries. Keacy Carty also played a valuable hand scoring 73 off 35 deliveries. Courtesy of the destruction caused by these two batters, the Knights posted a mammoth 250/4 in their 20 overs.
