As the Jonny Bairstow dismissal in Lord's Test has created a debate on social media among cricket fans and experts, a similar 2011 incident video has resurfaced where MS Dhoni recalled Ian Bell after a bizarre run out in the Nottingham Test.

It was the 2nd innings of the second Test between India and England in Nottingham when Eoin Morgan hit an Ishant Sharma delivery towards the leg-side. Praveen Kumar stopped the ball from crossing the boundary just in time but the players, even some from the visiting team, players felt that the ball had touched the rope.

Kumar gently picked up the ball and returned it to the wicket-keeper Dhoni, who passed the ball to a fielder Abhinav Mukund, who then dislodged the bails as the batters were standing outside the crease.

After the dismissal the Indian players were booed by the England fans, but surprisingly, Dhoni withdrew appeal, eventually winning the ‘ICC Spirit Of Cricket Award’ in 2011 for his special gesture. His gesture was widely praised then, and is still remembered as one of the generous acts in cricket history.

A similar situation happened in the second Ashes Test at Lord’s on Sunday, where plenty of outcry has been raised over Australia’s decision to dismiss English keeper-batter Jonny Bairstow on the fifth day. Bairstow had stayed out of his crease assuming the ball to be ‘dead’, which was unfortunately not the case.

With a sneaky throw, Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey managed to catch Bairstow short of the crease. The event caused a great deal of jeers around the Lord's stadium and bad blood between the arch-rivals.

Former India captain Ms Dhoni believed that cricket should be played in the right ‘spirit’ irrespective of the outcome. It is no wonder that the legendary cricketer won the prestigious spirit of the cricket award for his act on the tour of England.
