Touted as one of the favourites to win the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup (CWC) 2023, India begins their campaign against five-time champions Australia on October 8 in Chennai and plays the high-profile match against Pakistan on October 15 in Ahmedabad.

India is being pitted against two strong One-Day International (ODI) outfits in their first three matches, including Afghanistan on October 11, something that former captain Sunil Gavaskar, says will work in the hosts' favour.

Speaking to Star Sports, the former WC 1983 winner, explained that going up against strong sides early on will be advantageous for India.

Here's what Gavaskar said

"It would have been even more difficult if you were to play Australia in a must-win last match. I feel it is always an advantage to play against the good teams first.

If you don't get a good result, you have chances later. If you probably play against some weak team later, you will know what you need to do against them and with what margin you need to win,"

India will aim to win its third 50-overs World Cup trophy, having won in 1983 and 2011, respectively.  Ahead of the CWC 2023, India have two ODI series lined up; against West Indies in July, and Asia Cup 2023 in September.
