Indian batter Tilak Varma, who shot to fame courtesy of his exploits for Mumbai Indians in the IPL, impressed fans and critics with a sparkling performance on debut during India's first T20I match against West Indies in Trinidad on Thursday.

Although India lost the match by four runs, Varma's explosive batting was the highlight of the game and a big positive for the visitors.

From the very outset, Varma's innings was a sight to behold. Facing West Indies pacer Alzarri Joseph, he confidently dispatched consecutive sixes over deep mid-wicket in just his second and third balls in international cricket.

The young prodigy continued his aggressive knock, taking on Romario Shepherd in the eighth over with a six followed by a four. Varma's dream debut was cut short in the 11th over as he fell to Shepherd while attempting a pull shot.

Caught by Shimron Hetmyer at deep backward square leg, the dismissal marked the end of a brilliant 22-ball 39 that had put India in a commanding position in their chase of 150 runs.

Despite the loss, Varma's performance won accolades and ignited excitement for India's cricketing future. Dewald Brevis, his Mumbai Indians teammate and a great friend, added to the celebration by sending a heartfelt video message as he expressed admiration and support for Varma's impressive debut.

"I hope you're very excited. I don't know if I'm more excited that you, but I just wanna say from my side and from the Brevis family congratulations on your debut. It's such a great moment for you and your family. I can just imagine how your parents and everyone must be. It's great to see you out there living your dream, and it gave me goosebumps," said Brevis, his words resonating with the joy and pride felt by fans across the nation.

Varma's emotional response to Brevis's surprise showed the close bond between the two players.

"I really loved it. It was a wonderful surprise. My brother always loves you. I really appreciate for your message. Yeah, I'll see you soon. I'm calling you a video call, brother. Thank you. Thank you so much," replied Varma.

The second T20I between the two teams is scheduled on August 6 at Providence stadium in Guyana.
