Tilak Varma had a debut to remember as he whacked a rapid 22-ball 39 against West Indies in the first T20I at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad. The Mumbai Indians star launched three sixes in his innings, including two off successive balls to register his first set of runs in international cricket.

Varma took apart Alzarri Joseph the moment he arrived to the crease, following the early dismissals of Team India openers Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan.

Varma channels his MI energy to take Joseph apart

Team India, chasing 150 for victory in the series-opener, faltered within the powerplay by losing both in-form openers cheaply. Their early dismissals paved way for debutant Tilak Varma into the crease, who showed no first-game jitters as he crashed three sixes in his exhilarating 39-run knock against hosts West Indies.

Notably, he opened his account with two successive sixes off Alzarri Joseph within the first three deliveries of his international career.

Prior to the game, Varma was handed his maiden T20I cap by interim skipper Hardik Pandya. The senior all-rounder extended his wishes for the youngster, and urged him to keep working hard in the future.

Varma also plucked a sensational running catch during the West Indies innings to send in-form Johnson Charles cheaply back to the pavilion.

The match is the first in a five-match series between the two sides, set to be played until August 13 at Lauderhill, USA.
