Despite India losing the first T20I of the five-match series against West Indies by four runs in Trinidad on Thursday, there was a silver lining for the Hardik Pandya-led XI in the form of Tilak Varma.

Varma, who had a stellar showing in the Indian Premier League (IPL), made his T20I debut  for India and shone the brightest while others around him struggled.

The stylish southpaw slammed a glorious 22-ball 39, including two massive sixes off Alzari Joseph that caught the attention of former players and fans alike. Former India and Chennai Super Kings batter Robin Uthappa praised Varma for his knock, highlighting his approach.

Speaking to Jio Cinema, Uthappa called the Mumbai Indians player intelligent for the way he batted after India were two down for 29 and wished that he could have converted his start into a maiden fifty.

'Wish he got his fifty'- Uthappa showers praise on Tilak Varma

"We didn't expect 6,6 to start his international career. He made it look easy. I mean, these are some sublime shots, just the sound of the bat, certainly great shots and speak volumes about how confident he's feeling at the moment. And you know, I think he's got a very firm head on his shoulders, you know, and I think he's a very intelligent cricketer."

"That is where he likes to put pressure back on the opposition and we have spoken about this in the pre-match, you know, talk where we spoke about how he likes to up the ante when he goes in the bat and that's exactly what he did from the word go. So I wasn't surprised with the way he kicked off, but I wish he kicked on and got a 50 in that first game."

Apart from batting prowess, the 20-year-old also displayed agility in the field, grabbing as many as two catches. Varma will hope to continue his rich form into the upcoming T20Is, with India eyeing a comeback in the second encounter, which takes place on August 6 in Guyana.
