Melbourne Stars crumbled like ninepins while attempting to chase down 178 against defending champions Adelaide Strikers in Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2023 season.

The entire Stars line-up, including captain and Australian veteran Meg Lanning, folded up for just 29 in 9.3 overs to hand Strikers a huge 148-run win in match number four of the competition.

Melbourne Stars attain unwanted record

Melbourne Stars, fresh from clinching a two-run win over Sydney Sixers in WBBL 2023 opener, took field against defending champions Adelaide Strikers at the Karen Rolton Oval in Adelaide for their second match of the tournament.

Sophia Dunkley and captain Meg Lanning took first guard at the crease for Stars in their pursuit of 178 as posed by the Strikers. While Lanning was holed out at the deep in Danielle Gibson for just a run in the second over of the innings, her partner Dunkley launched a huge six to get things going from her end the following over.

As it turned out, Dunkley’s sole maximum remained the only boundary from the Melbourne Stars innings as their entire line-up crumbled at 29 in just 9.3 overs. Their abysmal batting effort in Adelaide also became the lowest-ever recorded T20 total, while taking only full-member T20Is and franchise league matches into consideration.

Sophia Dunkley top-scored in the innings with nine, while five extras turned out to be the next biggest benefactor for the Stars. Surprisingly, the innings featured only one duck in the form of Maia Bouchier.

Every Adelaide Strikers bowler, sans Jemma Barsby, claimed wickets with Megan Schutt’s 3-3 and Amanda-Jade Wellington 3-4 being the standout performers from the lop-sided evening chase.

Regardless of the recent outcome, Melbourne Stars need to regroup as they are once again slated to go up against the same opponent in a few days’ time (October 24) for their third WBBL 2023 outing.
