Australian legend Adam Gilchrist heaped effusive praise on Indian skipper Rohit Sharma for his "mature" captaincy at the ICC World Cup 2023. Despite the weight of expectations and tremendous pressure of the job, Rohit has been shining bright in his role as a top-order aggressor with the bat and his smart tactics as a skipper.

The experienced head has overseen an incredible start to the tournament, reigning at the top of the runs-chart for India while guiding the side to four consecutive victories. Rohit started the campaign with a duck against Australia but has since played blistering knocks of 131 versus Afghanistan, 86 against Pakistan and 48 when India were at loggerheads with Bangladesh.

The skipper has been extremely intelligent with his bowling changes and understanding enough to provide extra assurance and confidence to his bowlers on flat pitches. Gilchrist noted how Rohit gave Siraj an extra over in an expensive new-ball spell and brought him back for success with the old-ball in the matches against Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Gilchrist Hail Rohit Sharma's Captaincy

The former wicketkeeper-batter appreciated Rohit's steadfast nature and empathy as captain at the helm despite dealing with humongous pressure at an ICC event in home conditions.

Speaking for 'Club Prairie Fire', Gilchrist noted down Rohit's sense and sensibilities in giving Siraj the much-needed confidence booster when it could've been so easy for the skipper to take the expensive bowler out of the attack.

"Something that I've been really impressed by, and I think he is really matured and peaking at the right time is Rohit Sharma's leadership and captaincy," Gilchrist said.

"Some of his bowling changes, little smart moves.. ahhh.. it's such a tough job isn't it? Being the captain of India, particularly when you come on the back of MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli."

"People questioned whether he should really be captaining India. But I think he has been maturing really nicely as a leader. It's the little things."

Rohit's next test as a leader will be against the high-flying New Zealand team on Sunday.
