Mark Wood sent down a 154 kph bullet to Reeza Hendricks to record the fastest delivery of the ongoing 2023 World Cup. The English speedster was employed by skipper Jos Buttler to deliver the 12th over of the South African innings, after they had raced to 60-1 with Hendricks and Rassie van der Dussen still batting at the crease.

Mark Wood records World Cup 2023 fastest delivery

Mark Wood, who went wicketless in his side’s nine-wicket larruping at the hands of New Zealand in their 2023 World Cup opener earlier this month, snared three victims over the course of his side’s subsequent two fixtures against Bangladesh and Afghanistan respectively.

Turning up for England in their must-win match against South Africa in Wankhede, the right-arm quick became the third bowling change when he was brought on to bowl the 12th over of the South African innings.

In the first ball of his spell itself, Wood hurled down a delivery that clocked 154 kph to South Africa’s well-set batter Reeza Hendricks, who responded with a nudge towards mid-on for a quick single.

Wood’s 154 kph thunderbolt took him past Lockie Ferguson’s 153 kph to register the fastest delivery of the ongoing 2023 World Cup.

Nonetheless, Mark Wood’s pace did not seem to have much impact on the well-set South Africans as the duo accumulated 10 runs from his opening over.

By the time of first drinks break of the day, the Proteas reached 91-1 from their first 15 overs.
