Even though BCCI had said KL Rahul's comeback for the third Test in Rajkot against England is "subject to fitness clearance", the experienced Indian middle-order player appeared ripe for a timely return to the playing XI in the nets on Sunday (February 11).

Rahul was seen sweating it out in the nets and facing throwdowns at a practice session amidst the break ahead of the next fixture versus the Englishmen.

After making a terrific comeback to the Test squad in South Africa with a century and scoring a skilful 86 in Hyderabad, the 31-year-old missed the second Test in Vizag due to recurring quadriceps pain.

The elegant right-hander had undergone surgery after ravaging his quad on May 1 while playing for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in IPL 2023 and felt discomfort in his leg again after finishing off his playing duties in the opening Test versus the tourists.

However, following a quick rehab at the NCA, Rahul now looks fine to take the field again for India and bolster an understrength middle-order as the hosts strive to rally on the momentum of their win in Vizag and put England under pressure in Rajkot, with the third Test starting Thursday (February 15).

Missing the solidity and the greatness of Virat Kohli at No.4, the in-transition Indian side desperately require Rahul to take up the critical slot and produce a substantial score if they are to thwart the spirited and confident visitors, with the series levelled 1-1.

If Rahul is deemed unfit, however, the Rohit Sharma-led side faces a scenario where it will have to field another debutant Sarfaraz Khan in a heavily weakened middle-order, featuring also Shubman Gill and previous match's debutant Rajat Patidar.
