'Don't Think He's Worth That Money' - Sunil Gavaskar On KKR's Shocking Mitchell Starc Bid

Sunil Gavaskar still has his eyes raised over Kolkata Knight Riders' (KKR) staggering bid made to secure the services of Australian speedster Mitchell Starc ahead of IPL 2024. The Indian batting legend spoke without mincing words on the matter and said nobody is worthy of such a stunning prize for a two-month stint.

The Kolkata franchise spent a whopping INR 24.75 crores to fetch Starc at the mini-auction after an intense tussle at the bidding war. The final bid turned the left-arm speedster into the highest-ever purchase at the marquee T20 league, even as he makes a comeback after giving the IPL a cold shoulder for eight consecutive seasons since 2015.

Speaking to Star Sports, Gavaskar insisted KKR overprized Starc and perhaps should've backtracked on his name at some stage of the multi-franchise battle to rope the fiery speedster in their respective camps. He also demanded the pacer to now repay the faith and the money invested on him.

"Over the top, to be absolutely frank. I don't think anybody is worth that kind of money. If Starc can make an impact and win maybe four out of the 14 matches that he plays, then you can say money's worth. Then if he makes contributions in the other games - absolutely fantastic," Gavaskar said.

"He has got to bowl match-winning spells in at least four out of the 14 matches, and maybe the crucial matches against the Mumbai Indians, the Chennai Super Kings and RCB, because these three have top-class batting lineups. Bowl those teams out and you could even then say - money's worth," he added.

Starc, who last played the IPL for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), was due to turn out for KKR franchise in the 2018 edition before an injury forced him out of the commitment.

KKR have now finally got their desired pick in the kitty as Starc bolsters their attack while personally aiming for best preparations towards Australia's ICC T20 World Cup 2024 campaign.
