In a demonstration of the adage 'age is just a number', 44-year-old South African spinner, Imran Tahir, steered the Guyana Amazon Warriors to clinch their maiden Caribbean Premier League (CPL) title on Sunday.

Age-defying Tahir led the Warriors to CPL glory

Overcoming Trinbago Knight Riders with a thumping nine-wicket victory, the Warriors finally laid to rest their title drought, a journey marked by five prior finishes as runners-up.

After the game, an emotional Tahir was seen fighting back tears as the weight of the momentous achievement settled in. He indirectly addressed the skeptics who had expressed doubts regarding his captaincy. It was evident from his reaction post-match that he held the victory close.

"It's a special feeling. Lots of people said negative things before I came. About captaincy. I'm a proud captain. Proud father. Thank the Almighty. I'm very happy. Love everyone. Thank you everyone. Thank you CPL,” said Tahir.

His heartfelt gratitude found words as he thanked all those who believed in their journey, singling out Indian spinner R Ashwin, who had vouched for the Warriors' eventual success.

“Also want to thank R Ashwin from India. Before the tournament he said our team will do it,” added Tahir.

Coming to the game, the CPL 2023 bore witness to the Warriors' dominance. The Knight Riders were left reeling, cobbling together just 94 runs.

Their innings lacked momentum, saved momentarily by a 32-run effort from Keacy Carty and Dwayne Bravo after they were reduced to 49/6 in 10 overs. The star with the ball was Dwaine Pretorious for the Warriors, who delivered a brilliant spell of 4/26.

In response, despite a brief hiccup at the start of their chase, the Warriors remained unflinched. Saim Ayub, with a scintillating 52 off 41, combined with Hope's composed 32 off 32, charted the course to victory. The winning moment was marked by Ayub's six down the ground, a fitting end to a memorable tournament.
