On Thursday, India announced their squads for the upcoming white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, naming Suryakumar Yadav as their new T20I captain. Despite Surya's reputation as India's most valuable T20I batter, the move raised a million eyebrows, as Hardik Pandya found himself out of the leadership group. 

Notably, Pandya, who served as India's vice-captain in the T20 World Cup 2024, was expected to succeed Rohit Sharma as the new T20I skipper. 

But India's recently appointed head coach, Gautam Gambhir, apparently wanted Suryakumar as the new leader, shattering Pandya's captaincy dream.

However, interestingly, Gambhir once supported the idea of a vice-captain eventually being promoted to the skipper's position.

In a time when many feel Pandya has been hard done by, a video depicting Gambhir's hypocrisy has gone viral on social media. 

In the clip, Gambhir states that he finds it strange when a vice-captain isn't automatically considered the next captain, with someone else being preferred over him.

India name squads for SL series

The upcoming white-ball series against Sri Lanka will be Gambhir's first assignment as India's head coach. 

The series, which starts later this month, will see India and Sri Lanka lock horns with each other in three T20Is followed by as many ODIs. 

While Rohit Sharma will lead a star-studded Indian team in the ODIs, a relatively young team has been picked for the T20Is, with Suryakumar Yadav donning the skipper's hat.
