The MI New York were up against the San Francisco Unicorns in a battle for survival in the 16th match of the MLC 2024. This match was being played at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas. 

MI New York desperately needed to win this game in order to stay alive in the tournament. On the other hand, San Francisco needed a win in this game to be the second team to qualify for the playoffs. 


Unicorns fight their way to a respectable total

The Unicorns won the toss and batted first in the match. Even though they suffered a batting collapse at the beginning of the innings, courtesy of Corey Anderson and Hassan Khan, they managed to reach a competitive total of 148 runs in their 20 overs. 

The MI chase started on a steady note, even though they lost Clinton early. Dewald Brevis and Nicholas Pooran stuck together a partnership that got them moving towards the target. 

DB reminds of ABD

In the fourth over of the innings, Dewald Brevis played a shot that reminded the spectators of the South African legend AB de Villiers. On the second delivery of the fourth over, Short bowled a back-of-a-length delivery around the off stump. Brevis spotted the length early, rocked to his back foot, and then pulled it away over the mid-wicket fence for a huge maximum. 

The elegance, style and technique gave a flashback of ABD, with whom Brevis is often compared. The young South African opener played a good hand of 56 runs from 36 balls and set up the chase for the team. However, the middle-order could not get going, and in the end, MI fell short of the target by 4 runs.
