MI New York locked horns against the San Francisco Unicorns in the 16th match of the MLC 2024. Corey Anderson won the toss and opted to bat first at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas.

This match was of particular significance to both the teams as the Unicorns were eyeing qualification to the playoffs, and New York was looking to stay alive in the tournament.

San Francisco's fearsome top-order

The top order of the San Francisco Unicorns looks particularly dangerous, with the likes of Finn Allen, Jake Fraser-McGurk, and Matt Short slotted in. Allen and Short's power-hitting at the top has seen the team through in a couple of games, and the management was hoping for much of the same in this game. Fraser-McGurk dropped due to his lack of form, which depended a lot on the opening pair of Short and Allen.

The MI skipper, experienced Kieron Pollard, opened the bowling with his left-arm orthodox spinner, Noshthush Kenjige. The trick worked as Kenjige got rid of Allen in the very first over.

Kenjige's brilliance triggers Unicorns' collapse

On the third delivery of the first over, Kenjige pulled off a catch that will stick in the memories of cricket fans for long. He bowled a shortish delivery at the off and middle stump line. Finn Allen spotted the length and rocked back to slam that ball back towards the bowler. Kenjige dived to his right in reflex and took a stunning catch that left Allen astounded. He had to walk back dejected and not believing his eyes.

This wicket triggered a collapse of the Unicorn's top-order, which had them on the back foot during their batting effort. However, Corey Anderson and Hassan Khan stitched together a substantial partnership and dug the team out of the hole. The San Francisco Unicorns managed to win this game in the last ball by just three runs.
