Since Gautam Gambhir's appointment as India's head coach, the team's selection strategies have baffled fans.

Recent reports suggest that the former Indian opener views Suryakumar Yadav as a potential T20I captain, sparking widespread speculation about who will succeed Rohit Sharma following his retirement from T20Is.

Previously, Hardik Pandya was the frontrunner for the T20I captaincy, having served as vice-captain during the T20 World Cup.

Gambhir did not directly pitch for Surya: BCCI official

However, recent developments suggest his position might be in jeopardy. BCCI officials have indicated Gambhir's preference for a captain whose workload won’t hinder their performance.

“Although Gambhir did not directly pitch for Surya in the call, he made it amply clear that he would want to work with a captain whose workload does not become a stumbling block. Agarkar was clear with his views," BCCI official told  Hindustan times.

This has fueled discussions as the BCCI prepares to announce the squad for the T20I & ODI series against Sri Lanka. There is speculation that the 34-year-old Suryakumar Yadav might be given the leadership role.

India's white-ball tour of Sri Lanka will commence on July 27 at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.
