Washington Sundar Urges Indian Societal Change After Kolkata Rape Horror

Washington Sundar has urged for a major societal change in India following the tragic case of the rape incident in Kolkata that occurred earlier this month. The Indian off-spinner took to his Instagram account and shared an eye-opening message for his fellow countrymen in regards to the safety of women.

Apart from Sundar, fellow Indian cricketers Shreyas Iyer and Mohammed Siraj also raised concerns about women’s safety through various social media posts. Moreover, Virat Kohli’s wife and Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma slammed the ‘patriarchal mindset’ of Indian society on Instagram.

Washington Sundar expresses concerns over women’s safety

On Saturday, August 17, Indian off-spinner Washington Sundar took to his Instagram account and shared a sterling message expressing his concerns over the safety of women in the country.

Speaking against the backdrop of Kolkata’s rape horror, the 24-year-old cricketer urged his fellow countrymen to make women comfortable and secured in their presence.

Apart from Washington Sundar, star Indian batter Shreyas Iyer demanded strict punishment for the accused in Kolkata’s rape case, while Mohammed Siraj and Virat Kohli’s wife Anushka Sharma called out the ‘double standards’ over women’s safety in Indian society.

Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah also shared a powerful social media post where he emphasised the need to implement the absolute safety of women.

Earlier this month, a young female doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was raped and murdered inside the premises. The incident triggered nationwide outrage and protests demanding swift action against the accused.
