Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma Blamed For BCCI's 'Special Treatment' After Bangladesh Test Failure

Despite India’s mega 280-run victory over Bangladesh in the first Test, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s failures raised glaring questions over the duo’s absence from the domestic red ball tournament. Ex-cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar also jumped into the debate to call out BCCI’s special treatment of seniors.

India dominated Bangladesh to register a 280-run victory in the first Test held in Chennai. Homeboy Ravichandran Ashwin starred with a century and six-wicket haul.

However, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma departed cheaply in both innings, raising questions over their readiness for the series that followed after a 40-day international break.

Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma given special treatment by BCCI?

Sanjay Manjrekar, meanwhile, raised a concerning issue to highlight BCCI’s special treatment of senior players. Manjrekar opined that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli should have played the Duleep Trophy to get rid of the rust in the red ball format.

"I'm not worried, but I'm sure somebody made a note of the fact that they would have been better off had they played some red-ball cricket. There was the option of picking them in the Duleep Trophy."

"So one has to be careful about treating certain players differently and do what's best for Indian cricket and for the player. Virat and Rohit not playing (Duleep Trophy) was not good for Indian cricket, nor was it good for the two players. Had they played the Duleep Trophy and had some time in the red-ball cricket, things would have been different," Manjrekar said.

He added that senior players shouldn’t be treated differently because of their status in international cricket, as such absences hurt the players more than anyone else.

"But they have the class and experience to make a comeback later in the series, and I don't see them, for that reason, not being in form. But something that one must make a quiet note of, and that has been a problem with Indian cricket for a long time now, is that certain players get picked out for special treatment because of their status, which eventually hurts that player more than anyone else," he added.

Sanjay Manjrekar clarified that he trusts Kohli and Rohit’s ability to bounce back but the pattern of preferential treatment to seniors in Indian cricket is the core problem he wanted to highlight.

Virat Kohli added to Delhi’s probable Ranji Trophy squad

Delhi Cricket Association, DDCA, recently released a list of 84 probable names for the upcoming Ranji Trophy season, which features star Indian cricketer Virat Kohli and wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant.

This is the first time since 2019 that Kohli has been added to Delhi's probable list for Ranji Trophy season. While Kohli won’t be a regular participant due to international commitments, he can use a few games as preparations for the Australia tour.
