However, Sri Lanka turned the tables in the fourth inning. Despite Rachin Ravindra’s 92 off 168 balls resilience, Prabath Jayasuriya delivered a sensational fifer to bundle the Kiwis at 211 to snatch a 68-run victory. 

Jayasuriya fetched the Player of the Match award for his nine wickets in two innings, with Kamindu Mendis earning equal recognition for a century in the first innings.

The high-spirited Sri Lanka will likely overpower New Zealand as the second Test promises a mouth-watering contest.

On the other hand, New Zealand were fighting toe-to-toe with Sri Lanka at one stage, with notable contributions from the batting order and a fifer from William O’Rourke in the first inning. However, things went downhill in the chase as Rachin Ravindra was stranded alone on one end.

His 92 off 168 balls knock went into the losing cause the middle order collapsed brutally to Prabath Jayasuriya’s sensational spell.

Regardless, New Zealand also had a few positives to gain from the loss. William O’Rourke and Ajaz Patel claimed eight wickets each, whereas Rachin is emerging as a dependable player in Test format. 

While the opening pair has shown promise, the Kiwis are currently struggling in the lower middle order. It's crucial for them to build and maintain partnerships in the second Test, as this could be the key to a positive result.
