Yashasvi Jaiswal will be holding key to India’s chances against New Zealand in Mumbai, at least according to legendary spinner Anil Kumble. Following the conclusion of Day 2, Kumble signified the importance of the dashing Indian opening batter, and claimed that his primary task will be to negotiate threatening New Zealand spinner Ajaz Patel.
New Zealand concluded Day 2 with a lead of 143 runs, albeit with the loss of nine wickets. The visitors have already claimed the three-match series by winning the first two Tests in Bengaluru and Pune respectively.
Anil Kumble signifies importance of Yashasvi Jaiswal
While speaking on JioCinema, former Indian spinner Anil Kumble claimed that young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal will be holding key for the run-chase prospects of the hosts against New Zealand in Mumbai. According to Kumble, Jaiswal’s primary task is to negotiate Ajaz Patel and make life easier for the rest of the Indian batters.
The legendary spinner also added that the opener should not throw his wicket like he did in the first innings, as scoring runs is going to get more difficult once the ball gets older. He said:
“Yashasvi Jaiswal is going to be key for India. As a left-hander, his main job will be to negate Ajaz Patel. He should not just get a start and throw it away like in the first innings. You want him to get going because it is not going to be easy once the ball gets older and things start happening on the surface. If Jaiswal gets a good start, things will be easier for India.”
Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 30 runs from 52 balls in the first innings before an ambitious reverse-sweep accounted for his downfall against Ajaz Patel. Team India still managed to list 263 runs, thus gaining a handy 28-run lead over New Zealand courtesy of sublime half-centuries from Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant.
Later, Indian spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja as well as paceman Akash Deep skittled nine of New Zealand’s batters by stumps on Day 2. With a lead of 143 runs, New Zealand’s last-wicket pair of Ajaz Patel and William O’Rourke will be aiming to add as many runs as possible to put up a challenging task for the hosts.
