In a move that has taken both the cricketing and political worlds by surprise, Gautam Gambhir, the former Indian cricketer and current BJP Lok Sabha MP, has announced his decision to step away from politics.

With an eye on the upcoming cricket commitments, Gambhir has requested the Bharatiya Janata Party's president, J.P. Nadda, to relieve him of his political duties. His decision comes ahead of the much-anticipated Lok Sabha elections of 2024, underscoring a significant shift in his professional focus.

Gambhir request exit from BJP

Gambhir, aged 42, who joined the BJP in March 2019 and subsequently won the East Delhi constituency in the 2019 Indian general election, has acknowledged his appreciation for the chance to serve the public to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

His political journey saw notable initiatives like the installation of air purifiers in his constituency and the launch of COVID-19 vaccination camps through the Gautam Gambhir Foundation, reflecting his commitment to public service.

However, cricket seems to be calling him back. Gautam Gambhir is set to embrace a new role as a mentor for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), a team with which he has had a storied history, including leading them to two Indian Premier League (IPL) titles in 2012 and 2014. This new commitment marks a full circle for Gambhir, who played a pivotal role in KKR's successes during his tenure from 2011 to 2017.

The cricket community is abuzz with Gambhir's decision to return to the sport, especially in a mentorship role with KKR. Under his leadership, the team not only secured two IPL titles but also consistently made it to the playoffs, showcasing his strategic acumen and leadership qualities.
