Australian speed demon Mitchell Starc cannoned through the defences of Bangladesh opener Tanzid Hasan in just the third ball of the match. 

After the early Australian breakthrough, Hasan’s opening partner Litton Das led Bangladesh’s counterattacking recovery with captain Najmul Hossain Shanto by sharing 58 runs for the second wicket.

Ace spinner Adam Zampa struck back for Australia by getting rid of both well-set Bangladeshi batters, Litton Das and Najmul Hossain Shanto. 

Glenn Maxwell also chipped in with the wicket of Rishad Hossain during his brief two-over spell to reduce Bangladesh to 84-4 in 13 overs.

Keeping a lid on Bangladesh’s run-scoring splurge at the death, Australian captain Pat Cummins dismissed Mahmudullah, Mahedi Hasan and Towhid Hridoy in succession to take the first hat-trick of the tournament and the seventh in T20 World Cup history.

Cummins’ three-wicket burst drove Australian bowlers to restrict Bangladesh to just 140-8 at the end of their 20 overs.

Firebrand Australian openers David Warner and Travis Head took 59 runs off the first six overs before rain interrupted play at North Sound. 

Head eventually became the first wicket of the Australian innings, courtesy of losing his off-stump to Bangladeshi spinner Rishad Hossain. The leg-spinner also got rid of number three batter Mitchell Marsh a while later at 69-2.
