A powerful start for Australia in the Super 8s as they defeat Bangladesh by 28 runs (DLS method) in their first encounter in the 2nd stage of the Men's T20 World Cup 2024.

Mitchell Marsh spun the coin in his favor, elected to bowl first. Pat Cummins' hattrick and Adam Zampa's wonderful spell helped restrict Bangladesh to 140/8 in their 20 overs with Najmul Hossain Shanto (41) and Towhid Hridoy (40) playing good knocks.

Australia started off the chase in style with openers Travis Head (31 off 21) and David Warner (53* off 35) added 65 runs for the first wicket. Rain halted proceedings for a while and when the players returned, the Aussies lost a couple of wickets in quick interval with Head and Mitchell Marsh trapped by Rishad Hossain.

Glenn Maxwell at number 4 looked in good nick scoring 14 in 6 ball when rain intervened again but this time it poured a little longer to put the brakes on the game. Besides Rishad (2/23) only Mahedi Hasan impressed with the ball conceding 22 runs in his 4 overs.

Australia will face Afghanistan on Sunday with Bangladesh facing India on Saturday.

That’s the end of the innings. A brilliant bowling display from Australia comes to an end. They bowled beautifully after electing to bowl first and have restricted Bangladesh to 140/8. The Bangladeshi batters failed to get going on this sluggish surface and have surely posted a below-par total on the board.

Bowling first, Mitchell Starc knocked over Tanzid Hasan on a three-ball duck in the opening over of the game. Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto joined Litton Das at the crease and led the recovery work. Das struggled to get going but Shanto looked good at the crease and kept ticking the scoreboard as Bangladesh finished the powerplay on 39/1.

Das and Shanto stitched a 58-run partnership for the second wicket before Adam Zampa cleaned up the former on 25-ball 16. Rishad Hossain was promoted up the batting order at number four but it didn’t work out for the Bangla Tigers as he got dismissed on two on the last ball of the 10th over.

Towhid Hridoy walked out to bat at number five. Shanto held the innings nicely and scored 41 off 36 balls before getting trapped in front of the stumps in the 13th over. It was a short stay for Shakib Al Hasan (8) at the crease. Bangladesh kept losing wickets at regular intervals and failed to finish with a flourish. Hridoy scored 40 before falling in the last over. Bangladesh finished their innings on 140/8 as the lower-order batters failed to contribute.

Pat Cummins was the pick of the bowlers for Australia. He picked up a hat-trick and registered figures of 3/29 in his four overs. Adam Zampa also bowled beautifully and grabbed two scalps, giving away only 24 runs in his four overs.
