On Tuesday, August 19, the BCCI announced a 15-member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup edition, starting from September 9. Notably, Suryakumar Yadav will lead the side with Shubman Gill becoming the vice-captain.
The upcoming edition will be the 13th edition of the prestigious event, and Suryakumar Yadav has become the ninth Indian captain to lead the team in the prestigious continental cup.
Captains To Lead India In Asia Cup
Notably, India will play their 12th Asia Cup tournament, first played in 1984 under the leadership of Sunil Gavaskar. The Little Master was the first Indian to captain the Men in Blue in the continental cup and also led the country to the title.
Dilip Vengsarkar was the second player to captain India in the Asia Cup, which was in the 1986 edition, given India boycotted the 1984 tournament. Vengsarkar too led India to glory.
Mohammad Azharuddin was the 3rd player to lead India in the Asia Cup, which was in 1990 edition, and the Men in Blue emerged victorious. Azhar led India in two Asia Cup editions, but was replaced by Sachin Tendulkar for the 1997 edition.
Sourav Ganguly took on the charge in 2000 and led the Men in Blue in two editions, but failed to win any Asia Cup title under his regime.
MS Dhoni took over the leadership role in 2008 Asia Cup and led Team India in four Asia Cups (2008, 2010, 2012, 2016), the most by any India captain. Under Dhoni's leadership, India won two Asia Cup titles.
Notably, Virat Kohli too led India in just one Asia Cup trophy, which was in 2014, when MS Dhoni was ruled out of the squad because of a side-strain.
Rohit Sharma was the last India captain before Suryakumar Yadav and captained India in three editions - 2018, 2022, and 2023.
