South Africa off-spinner Prenelan Subrayen made his ODI debut on a triumphant note on August 19, as he picked up the key wicket of firebrand opener Travis Head in a match-winning cause against hosts Australia. Subrayen sent down his 10 overs at the expense of just 46 runs for South Africa as the visitors took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
However, the joy of his maiden outing was swiftly clouded as the debutant found himself reported for a suspect action, turning celebration into scrutiny.
From Cloud 9 To Suspicion For ODI Debutant
South Africa off-spinner Prenelan Subrayen has been reported for a suspect bowling action during his team’s series-opening first ODI match against Australia in Cairns on Tuesday, August 19. The match officials specified concerns about the legality of Subrayen’s bowling action in their report after the game.
The 31-year-old is now expected to undergo an Independent Assessment of his bowling action at an ICC testing facility. Notably, the match also marked Prenelan Subrayen’s ODI debut for South Africa, making the development a bittersweet turning point in what should have been a memorable career milestone.
Prenelan Subrayen also made his Test debut for South Africa just last month with a match against Zimbabwe at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo. The cricketer celebrated the occasion by cleaning up the Zimbabwean tail in their first innings to bag sensational figures of 4-42 in 10 overs. Subrayen’s four-fer coupled with Corbin Bosch and Senuran Muthusamy’s second innings breakthroughs set up path of a comprehensive innings victory for the Proteas.
Nonetheless, South Africa will now face Australia in the second ODI of the three-match series on August 22 at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay.
